Davie Provan, who has a regular column in the Scottish Sun, has recently offered his thoughts on Peter Lawwell.
The Hoops’ chief executive has been singled out for snide criticism in regard to his yearly salary, with Provan claiming that he takes home seven times what that the governor of the Bank of England pockets in a year.
According to a report published in November 2019, Lawwell took home a whopping £3.5m in the 2018/19 season alone.
In a piece published by the Scottish Sun, Provan had this to say on the subject.
“LET me start with an apology. Recently I claimed Peter Lawwell was on three times the salary of the governor of the Bank of England.
“Turns out I was wrong. The new governor earns half-a-million a year. Lawwell trousered seven times that amount last year. Forgive me, Peter.”
However, the former Celtic player did cut him some slack, suggesting that he is doing a good job balancing the books: “A quick look at Celtic’s bank balance suggests he knows what he’s doing.”
But the figures alone were enough to prompt plenty of disgruntled reaction from fans, with many describing his salary as “obscene”.
These fans, meanwhile, argued Lawwell’s case and hinted the positive work he is doing justifies the healthy payout.
And given how domineering Celtic have been in domestic competitions in recent years, it’s easy to sympathise with that point of view.
One fan went a step further and pointed to Rangers’ financial struggles to suggest fans should be careful what they wish for in regard to Lawwell.
But scathing criticism was still to come.
One fan slammed Lawwell by arguing both he and Dermot Desmond, the club’s majority shareholder, could cost them in their bid to win 10 in a row.
Finally, another supporter urged the club to get rid of Lawwell due to his astronomical wages.
